Kosta Y. Mumcuoglu is an Israeli parasitologist, born in Turkey, at the Parasitology Unit of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (Kuvin Center for the Study of Infectious and Tropical Diseases) of the Hebrew University–Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. Because Aeromonas endosymbionts complicate leech therapy, he and colleagues showed in Clinical Microbiology and Infection (2010) that feeding Hirudo medicinalis ciprofloxacin in an arginine solution reduced leech-associated aeromonads to undetectable levels: aeromonads were found in 57 of 80 control leeches but in none of 56 treated leeches, treated leeches survived up to 4 months, and 61% of them took human blood for at least 4 weeks after treatment, suggesting that treated leeches might substitute for systemic chemoprophylaxis (PMID 19523050).
